Prof. Marco Montorsi
was born in Milano (Italy) January 14, 1954.
Graduated at the University of Milano School of Medicine in 1978;
Degree of the Postgraduate School of General Surgery (University of Milano) in 1983; Degree of the
Postgraduate School of Thoracic Surgery (University of Turin) in 1987.
From 1988 to 2001 he was Associate Professor of Surgery of the
University of Milano; since 2001 he is Professor of Surgery of the University of Milano School of
Medicine. He is the Director of the Post-Graduate School of Digestive Surgery of the University of
Milano
From 1996 to 2004 he was Head of Hepatobiliary Surgery Unit, San Paolo
Academic Hospital in Milano.
From March 2004 he is Head of the III General Surgery Unit at the
Istituto Clinico Humanitas in Milano, an affiliated hospital of the University of Milano School of
Medicine.
He is author or co-author of 265 scientific publications, 148 on
peer-review journals.
He is member of the following Societies: European Surgical Association
(ASA); International Hepatopancreatobiliary Association (IHPBA); International Society for
Digestive Surgery ( Vice President in the Executive Committee for the term 2007-2009); European
Association of Endoscopic Surgery; Association Chirurgie Hepatobiliare et Transplantation.
He is referee of the following journals: Digestive Surgery, Digestive
and Liver Diseases, Annals of Surgery
His main interests are in the field of the diagnosis and treatment of
hepatobiliary and pancreatic diseases. Surgical treatment of Hepatocellular carcinoma and liver
metastases;the role of intraoperative ultrasound and minimally invasive surgery with laparoscopic
ultrasound for digestive diseases are both arguments of major interest.
He also has interests in other fields of the digestive diseases such
as pancreatic diseases, colorectal surgery and surgery of the abdominal wall. To this regard he and
his team are currently conducting several prospective studies concerning different aspects of both
colorectale and pancreatic surgery.
During his academic activity he has personally supervised to successful completion the work and
final thesis of several students attending the University of Milan.
